Goddess Kalaratri is the fiercest, most awe-inspiring form of Goddess Durga, worshipped on Saptami. Her complexion is midnight black, her hair untamed, and she exhales fierce flames of cosmic fire. Riding a sturdy donkey, she wields a sharp iron scimitar and a thunderbolt spike in her left hands, while her right hands grant blessing and absolute protection. Although her outer form strikes terror into the hearts of demons (having destroyed Chanda, Munda, and Raktabija), she is known as 'Shubhankari' (the harbinger of auspiciousness) because she protects her sincere devotees from all fears, ghosts, diseases, and premature death.
Embracing the shadow, eradicating deep-rooted fears, and recognizing that destructive cosmic forces serve the purpose of clearing the old so the new divine order can flourish.
