Goddess Skandamata is the fifth form of Navadurga, worshipped on Panchami. She is the divine mother of Lord Skanda (Kartikeya / Murugan), the supreme commander of the divine army who defeated the demon Tarakasura. Depicted with four hands, she lovingly holds the infant Lord Skanda on her lap with one hand, holds delicate lotus flowers in two hands, and extends the fourth hand in the Abhaya Mudra (gesture of fearlessness and blessing). Worshipping Skandamata not only invokes the Mother's boundless affection but also automatically earns the blessings of Lord Kartikeya.
